Out of a deep love for the Lord and a desire for a place to worship, Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church was founded in the month of March 1925, under the leadership of Reverend J. W. Graham. The very first building was an old house in the Varn Quarters and the first service was held on March 15, 1025, with the third Sunday in each month being the day of worship. Some of the founding members were Brother Grant Butler, Sister Emma Butler, Brother Tom Sharpe, Sister Lula Sharpe, Brother Morgan (Bud) Horne, Sister Susie Horne, Sister Lillie Mae Moore, and Sister Mattie Mays. Reverend Graham served as Pastor for one year. The work they started is yet in action. “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain” Psalm 127:1.
Past Pastors of the church were Reverend M. B. Butler, Reverend W.M. Fudge, Reverend L.S. Wrice, Reverend Frank Carter, Reverend Luther B. Robinson, and Reverend Jimmy Williams Jr. The current Pastor is Rev. Dr. Willie J. Harris. Our Motto: Seeking the Lost and Strengthening the Weak Among Us, and our goal is Winning the World for Jesus Christ.
